LANAP LASER DENTISTRY
LANAP Recovery & Aftercare
What to Expect After LANAP
One of the biggest advantages of LANAP is how gentle the recovery process is compared to traditional gum surgery. Most patients return to work and normal activities the next day with minimal soreness, swelling, and bleeding.
The key to optimal healing is following our aftercare instructions carefully. Your body is doing remarkable regenerative work over the coming weeks and months, so simple steps like maintaining a soft diet and good oral hygiene will support this natural healing process.
Diet Guidelines After LANAP
Eating the right foods after LANAP supports healing and prevents disruption of the delicate healing tissues. Start with liquids and very soft foods for days 1-3 (smoothies, yogurt, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs). Progress to soft foods for days 4-14 (pasta, soft fish, steamed vegetables, rice). After 2 weeks, slowly introduce firmer foods while avoiding very hard, crunchy, or sticky foods for at least a month.
Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol and smoking during recovery, as both impair healing.
Day-by-Day Recovery Timeline
LANAP recovery is gentle and predictable. Here is what to expect at each stage of your healing journey.
Day 0: Treatment Day
Mild soreness after local anesthesia wears off (2-4 hours). Take pain medication as directed. Some patients experience minimal swelling. Rest as much as possible.
Days 1-3: Liquid & Soft Diet
Follow a liquid to very soft diet. Avoid hot foods for the first 24 hours. Do not brush or floss treated areas. Gentle warm salt water rinses are okay. Most patients need only occasional pain relief by day 2-3.
Days 4-14: Gradual Transition
Introduce soft foods gradually. Use an ultra-soft brush on treated areas. Continue warm salt water rinses several times daily. Swelling should be noticeably improving.
Weeks 2-4: Returning to Normal
Transition back to a normal diet, avoiding very hard or crunchy foods. Gums are healing well. Gentle brushing is fine. You should see significant improvement in inflammation.
Months 1-6: Active Regeneration
Bone regeneration is actively occurring. Follow-up visits at 1 month and 3 months to monitor healing. Maintain excellent home care with gentle brushing and flossing.
Months 6-12: Full Results
Evaluate bone regeneration on X-rays at 6 and 12 months. Transition to regular maintenance cleanings every 3-4 months to maintain your results long-term.
Aftercare Do's and Don'ts
Follow your dentist's instructions for pain medication and any prescribed antibiotics to support optimal healing.
Mix 1/2 teaspoon salt in 8 oz warm water and rinse gently several times daily starting day 1 to promote healing.
Use 2-3 pillows to keep your head elevated and reduce swelling during the first few nights after treatment.
Follow-up visits at 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months are essential to monitor healing and bone regeneration.
Suction and forceful spitting can dislodge the blood clot that is essential for healing and bone regeneration.
Tobacco products significantly impair healing and reduce the success of LANAP treatment. Avoid all tobacco during recovery.
Avoid nuts, popcorn, hard candies, sticky caramel, and hard chips for at least a month to protect healing tissues.
Regular cleanings every 3-4 months prevent disease recurrence and maintain your results long-term after LANAP.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long before I can go back to work?
Most patients return to work the next day. You may experience mild soreness but it's generally manageable with over-the-counter pain relievers.
Can I exercise after LANAP?
Light activity is fine after 24-48 hours. Avoid strenuous exercise for about a week as it can increase blood flow and slow healing.
When can I brush my teeth normally?
Avoid brushing treated areas for the first 3 days. After that, use an ultra-soft toothbrush for about 2 weeks before returning to your normal brushing routine.
Is some bleeding normal after LANAP?
Light bleeding or oozing is normal for the first 24-48 hours. If you experience heavy or persistent bleeding, contact our office.
How long does full healing take?
Soft tissue healing occurs within a few weeks. Bone regeneration is a gradual process that continues for up to 12 months after treatment.
